Have you ever had anything lost in the mail? This had never happened to me before, and to be honest, I typically took the expression to mean one of two things. Either the sender never actually sent anything, or the recipient wanted to pretend that they never received the mail to avoid attending, responding, etc.
And then this year, it happened. Something sent to me actually did get lost in the mail. It was an invitation to a friend’s baby shower. I was expecting the invitation, so when it did not arrive, I simply asked for the date, time and location. No big deal, but it was just strange that the invitation was sent to the correct address and just never arrived.
Then more than a month after invitations went out, something that looked like it had been through the mill turned up in my mailbox. It was, in fact, the baby shower invitation. Where had it been? What did it see? And, why did it take so long to go from one Chicago neighborhood to the next? So many questions, but I am certain that if that piece of mail could talk, it would have some interesting stories to share about the inter-workings of the “reliable” USPS.
